Almost Famous, Northern Quarter, Manchester

“Riiiiiiiiise like a phoenix, out of the ashes”

Sorry, just channelling a bit of Conchita Wurst (Eurovision 2014 winner) there, but it’s appropriate because Almost Famous did rise from the ashes, having suffered a major fire last year, returning to pumping out over the top burgers in their flagship venue, alongside their Deansgate and Liverpool restaurants.

On the final evening of our Manchester break, Sara and I visited Almost Famous after enjoying their burgers previously at Luck, Lust, Liquor and Burn.

We eventually found it, a hard place to find if you’ve never been before, despite being in the same building as LLL&B, it’s not signposted at all, but you are greeted at the door so you know you’re at the right place. We headed upstairs and were shown to a table… right next to someone else, in a very quiet restaurant (it had only just opened for the evening).

After a look through the menu we ordered food and drinks at the bar. I went for a pint of Brooklyn Lager, because it’s a nice crisp refreshing lager that actually tastes of something.

Sara had a Cherry Bomb cocktail, which I didn’t care for because I hate cherries, and also, it came in a bleeding jar. The sooner this putting drinks in jars thing goes out of fashion, the better, as far as I am concerned. I like drinks in a glass. Still, yay, a sparkler!

Soon after food arrived, hooray, messy burger time. Sara had the Famous Burger,  2 beef patties with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, famous sauce and chipotle ketchup. Just like with Solita, AF serve their burgers with a touch of pink, so Sara’s was ordered well done, and arrived as such.

This is quite a towering burger, and looked delicious, but I couldn’t lust over the beautiful simplicity of Sara’s burger for too long, because I had my own to eat.

I decided to go into bacon overload, and went for the Smokey & The Bandit burger, 2 beef patties with cheese, JD candied bacon, BBQ fried onions, chillies, chipotle and baconnaise.

Now, that’s not bacon overload, I hear you say. No, you’re right, it’s not, but I also had it, as did Sara, with BACON BACON FRIES!

Potato (and about three sweet potato) fries with baconaisse and bacon bits. Just music to my ears/lips/tongue/face. Basically, just shovel them all into my mouth hole. The good news about my burger, too, was whilst Sara’s was well done, mine did come with a touch of pink, which really added juiciness and made this burger one of the best burgers I have ever eaten, hands down.

Soon after, however, it was time to leave with full bellies back to our hotel apartme… oh, no, we went out for cocktails! Hooray!!
